Galen Gives Back

Galen embraces a culture of community and service. We feel it is our responsibility to educate health care professionals with the express purpose of creating positive change in the communities they serve. Galen encourages students, faculty and staff to continuously evolve as responsible citizens who demonstrate a spirit of generosity by providing and supporting service-oriented opportunities.

A student success coordinator on each campus facilitates community service opportunities for various Galen clinical groups and Galen offers academic courses that integrate community service with academic content. In developing our strategic plan, Galen created a Service goal of more than 2000 hours of institutional involvement in community service projects and more than 500 hours of volunteer initiatives for each campus.

Over the past year, our faculty, staff and students significantly beat this goal when they logged more than 7000 volunteer and service-oriented hours across the four campus communities. In addition to funds raised by students, staff and faculty, Galen donated nearly $50,000 to non-profit organizations. As an organization, Galen annually participates in Light the Night for Leukemia and Lymphoma, blood drives, and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the individual campuses donate to and volunteer for countless other local charities.

As a nod to the true impact Galen College of Nursing has on the community, the institution was named to the 2009 and 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The award recognizes college and universities for their impact on issues ranging from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice.
